Patternwork (Chrysanthemums and Crickets)

Gilded Patternwork is a luxurious, decadent gilded deck of playing cards. Months were spent hand-drawing intricate seamless patterns. Inspired by British textile designer William Morris and other traditional tapestries, mixed with Japanese dying and traditional iconography. Each pattern is themed and named after culturally significant Japanese botany and insects. The concept of the Gilded Patternwork series was inspired by 'goldwork embroidery' - using metal threads to play on light in embroidery. The style developed in Asia and was popularized (called Opus Anglicanum) in medieval England in church hangings and later in renaissance tapestries.
